Keeping the memory of your family alive may be as simple as putting a picture of them on display in your home. You could do something as simple as putting a photo in a frame, but perhaps you would like to have a slightly more unconventional display. Listed below are a few creative ways that you could go about showcasing your photos. Use these ideas to create a unique photo display in your home that your family can cherish for years to come.

Canvas Art

Have you ever thought about turning your family photos into actual works of art? You can get your photos on canvas, and they will look just like works of art. There are options to do this that can fit any price range, but this is a unique way to see your family photos without actually having them on photo paper. Canvas photos look more professional than traditional photos, and they can be framed just like pictures in an art gallery. Your family will surely love a display like this in your home.

Family Collage

If you feel like getting crafty one day, you can use an assortment of family photos to make aunique collage in your home. Simply get a piece of cardboard or something else to act as the backing of the collage and set out your pictures in random order. Then when you like what you see, you can put some collage glue on the back and front to seal the photos in place. This can be a fun family project that anyone can do, and it is guaranteed to be one of a kind.

Clothes Line

Photo displays do not always have to be professional. While it is a good idea to have some professional photo displays in your home, you can also have some that are a bit out of the box. For instance, you can hang a string on a wall and use clothes pins to hold photos along it. You could also use this to display Christmas cards or rewards that your kids get at school, depending on your needs. All you have to do is see the creative purposes behind unexpected items in your home.

Creating a unique display for family photos is a great way to show your loved ones how much you care. Whether you want photos printed on canvas or something else for your family, the memories you create through your displays will last a lifetime.

Uploading a digital photo to photos printed on canvas starts you off on the resolution and cropping page. A cropbox will appear over your image at the canvas size requested. If you would like your print at a different canvas print size, you can do so with the change size drop down at the bottom of the page. The crop box overlay will then show the image at the new canvas print size.

This crop box can be adjusted in several ways. One of the first adjustments you will want to look at is the flip orientation button, just above your picture. This give you the opportunity to preview your photo at both the landscape and portrait orientation.

The example below gives a good idea of the choices availbale to you when using the orintation feature on this page.

LANDSCAPE

PORTRAIT

You can continue to the next step with the area inside the crop box after you have adjusted your photo to be printed on canvas.

Your canvas print is professionally stretched and should remain taught for a long time. However, if your photo on canvas is exposed to radical changes in humidity or air pressure, it is possible that your canvas photo could loosen and sag, resulting in your print not living up to its full potential. Follow these steps and your canvas will look like new in no time.

For slight loosening, there is a simple way to tighten your canvas. Simply spray some water on the back of the print. Do not use too much water, and if available, use a spray bottle and saturate the back of the print. After drying, this will cause the canvas to tighten. However, if this does not work, there are other steps you can take.

In addition to water, there are liquid canvas tightening agents that can be used. These are applied in a similar fashion as water, always to the back of the print. One draw back to this method is the price, as canvas tightening agents can be expensive when used on large prints.

Make sure to only use these products on prints purchased from Photos Printed on Canvas. Our canvas prints are properly laminated and protected, so the chemicals from these tightening products will not damage the print. It has been reported that they can soak through the canvas and damage giclee prints produced from other companies.

The final solution to loose canvas is to have the print re-stretched. This would entail removing staples (or whatever fastens the print to the wooden stretcher bars) and refastening the canvas. It is not necessary to remove all staples. Only remove a few on two perpendicular sides. Then carefully pull the canvas taught again with specialty canvas pliers, which should be available at any hobby store.

As a last resort, we recommend taking your canvas photo to a professional, who should be able to give several solutions to your problem. Your local custom frame shop should have the expertise to re-stretch the print properly.

Please remember that photos on canvas are not designed to be stretched as taught as a canvas for an oil painting. As long as the print does not visibly sag or have ripples, the stretched print has the proper tension.

Now that you have purchased a canvas photo from Photos Printed on Canvas, you have a canvas print that will last a lifetime. Printed with archival quality material and coated with a liquid laminate, your photos to canvas could last over 100 years. However, some care may be needed to make sure your print up to its full potential. Follow these simple steps to make sure your treasured canvas print lasts.

First of all, don’t handle your print unnecessarily, and if you need to handle the print, make sure your hands are clean. Touching your print repeatedly could leave unsightly fingerprints. In addition, moving your photo on canvas repeatedly can lead to accidental nicks and tears from brushing up against furniture and walls.

When placing your print initially, choose a spot that will display your print properly without putting it in danger. Choose a reasonably shaded spot, not one constantly exposed to direct sunlight. Although the print is UV protected, if left in direct sunlight UV rays can eventually over the years cause your canvas print to become dull and fade. Also remember that your print is made from cotton and wood, two materials very susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature. Although all our materials are treated to withstand this, constant exposure to humidity could cause the wooden stretcher bars to warp, or even cause the canvas to loosen and sag.

Next, take the time to care for your canvas photos. The occasional dusting will make your print look like new. Remember to use a dry cloth or feather duster. If necessary, use a damp cloth to clean your print. All of our canvas prints are coated with a protective water resistant laminate. Do not use liquid solvents or cleaning fluids to clean your print, as this can severely damage the print. Solvent could eat through the top laminate coat and even corrode the ink underneath.

By following these simple steps, you will insure that your canvas print lasts a lifetime.

We get a lot of questions about our different stretching options and we felt it would be a good blog post to explain in more detail just what stretching a canvas print means.

Stretching is the main way to display a canvas print. Since canvas is made of cotton, it is very flexible and will actually stretch out when tension is applied(much like a cotton t-shirt). This feature makes it possible to tighten the canvas much like a drum.

The first step when stretching a canvas print is building the frame that the canvas will be stretched around. The frame is appropriately called a stretcher frame and is assembled out of stretcher bars(or stretcher strips). Stretcher bars are made out of wood and have a rounded beveled edge on the outside edge for the canvas to easily wrap around. Good stretcher molding is made from kiln dried wood to prevent warping.

Once the frame is assembled the canvas print can then be attached. The canvas print is centered on the stretcher frame and staples are inserted into the back of the frame to hold the canvas in place. Tension is applied to the canvas as the staples are inserted so the canvas does not sag.

Stretching a canvas print over a wooden frame gives the print depth and dimension that a flat paper print can not. This allows your photos on canvas to be hung without the need for a decorative frame and still have a elegant look.

To take a great photo, whether for its own sake or for future canvas printing, it is important to become an active director of your photography. While some photos taken while the subject is not paying attention can be funny or can give the photograph a feel of authenticity, many times pictures taken spontaneously are not suitable for use.

First, you should take the time to arrange your subjects in a pleasing way. Add props if necessary, do your best to even out the composition. However, try not to have too much going on in one photograph. A busy and cluttered background can distract from your subjects. Also, make sure to check for anything out of place in the background. If you are taking a picture outside, make sure a tree or telephone pole is not sprouting from the top of a person’s head. If one direction is not working, try taking the photo from a different point of view.

Next, make sure there is sufficient light. Great lighting makes great pictures, while poor lighting can make your subjects underexposed and difficult to see. Overhead light, such as sunlight, can cast shadows across faces. Use the fill flash on your camera to improve lighting. This can lighten shadows and brighten up faces. Most pictures taken at a distance will be too dark for the flash to cover. For most cameras, the average distance for the flash is ten feet, but be sure to check your own camera specifications.

Now you are ready to take your photo. To help connect with your subject, try taking pictures at eye level. With children and dogs, this can mean dropping down to one knee. Try to move in close to your subject; Eliminate distracting backgrounds to make your subject look its best. This can make your photographs more personal and inviting.

Try to move the camera around in order to get the best possible shot. Try to turn your camera sideways to capture more of your subject. When photographing a person, it is not always necessary for her to look directly into the camera. Just being photographed at eye level should create a personal and inviting feel.

To get great photos on canvas, it starts with taking great pictures. By using these simple tips and adding your own creativity, you will be getting fantastic canvas prints in no time.
